Oncologic and aesthetic outcomes in oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgery: A single surgeon’s experience
Abstract
Background: Oncoplastic breast surgery (OPBS) is a customized surgical technique aims to maintain oncological principles and to achieve an acceptable breast appearance altogether. In Our center we practice OPBS conducted by a single surgeon to treat breast cancer patients since 2019.
The aim of this study was to summarize oncological, surgical (objective) and aesthetic (subjective) outcomes of all OPBS center’s patients to date, operated by a single surgeon.
Methods: A retrospective chart review of the first 105 patients diagnosed with stage 0–3 breast cancer and treated with oncoplastic techniques by a single surgeon over a 35-months period between September 2019 to August 2022. Patient's demographics, oncological and surgical data were collected. Patient's satisfaction was assessed through the Breast-Q online questionnaire.
Results: A total of 105 females aged 49.5±12.2 years were included. The average size of breast lesions was 23.9±20.3 mm, with 26 patients having lesions 2–5 cm in size (25%), and 9 patients having tumors larger than 5 cm (0.1%). Six patients experienced a complication requiring intervention (0.06%). The positive margin rate was 0.06% (n=6), and the completion mastectomy rate was 0.03% (n=3). Breast-Q scores of 32 patients were recorded to date (30% response rate) and showed high level of breast satisfaction, process of care, psychosocial, physical, and sexual satisfaction domains postoperatively.
Conclusions: According to our experience, patients of the OPBS center were highly satisfied with the cosmetic results, along with good oncologic outcomes and reasonable complications rate.
