Histologic analysis of tru cut and resection specimens in diagnosing breast cancers: An Indian study.
Abstract
Background: Breast cancer is a health condition that manifests in females in every nation around the world. The incidence of this malignancy tends to increase significantly as women age, particularly in their later years of life. Breast cancer diagnosis is done by USG or Mammography and fine needle aspiration cytology, followed by tru cut core needle/excision biopsy.
Materials and methods: This study was done from January 2024 to end of April 2025. The patients underwent both tru cut biopsy and some underwent Breast conservation surgery (BCS) and modified radical mastectomy (MRM) in the hospital. Surgical specimens were sent for histological examination.
Results: Total number of resection cases were fifty-one. Invasive ductal carcinoma (not otherwise specified) was most common (56.86%), followed by phyllodes tumors (7/51), and fibroadenoma and fibrocystic disease, each comprising of 5.88 %. There were also some unique cases like encapsulated papillary carcinoma without invasive carcinoma; invasive lobular carcinoma; mucinous carcinoma and solid papillary carcinoma. TNM staging was done (pT2 most common, 54.05 %) followed by 10.81 % of pT1c cases. Majority of cancers were in Grade II (58.06 %), followed by grade I (25.81%). Lympho-vascular invasion was present in 7 cases with one case having peri-neural invasion. The core needle biopsy comprised of thirty-one cases, and Invasive ductal carcinoma (not otherwise specified, with 25.81 %) was most common, Benign fibroepithelial lesions, benign phyllodes tumor and granulomatous mastitis were 6.45 % each.
Conclusion: Both resection and core needle biopsies are important in diagnosing breast tumors/cancers. But core needle biopsies need to be performed with enhanced efficiency to get better more conclusive diagnoses. There is a significant increase of phyllodes tumors in our study.
