Isolated Locoregional Recurrence in Breast Cancer Patients After Mastectomy A Retrospective Analysis from a Tertiary Care Center in India
Abstract
Isolated locoregional recurrence (ILRR) in breast cancer refers to recurrence limited to the ipsilateral chest
wall and/or regional lymph nodes without evidence of distant metastasis within four months. While ILRR
uncommon, it has important prognostic and therapeutic implications, particularly in resource-limited
settings. The incidence and biological behavior of ILRR may vary across populations, requiring
context-specific data to guide clinical decisions
OBJECTIVE:
To analyze the clinical patterns, risk factors, and treatment strategies for ILRR in post-mastectomy breast
cancer patients at a tertiary care hospital in South India.
METHODS:
This retrospective study reviewed 75 patients who developed ILRR following mastectomy between 2012
and 2017. All cases were evaluated for nodal involvement, histological subtype, surgical margin status,
hormone receptor status, and biological subtype at initial diagnosis. Advanced imaging, including MRI,
ultrasound, and PET-CT, was used to exclude distant metastases. Patterns of recurrence and treatment
outcomes were documented and analyzed.
